A Guided Kambo Ceremony

Kambo is a traditional Amazonian medicine sourced from the secretion of the Phyllomedusa bicolor, also known as the Giant Monkey Tree Frog. For generations, the Matsés Tribe, who live along the border of Peru and Brazil, have worked with this medicine as part of their cultural, spiritual, and healing traditions.

Traditionally, Kambo was used before hunting to help cultivate clarity, focus, resilience, and strength. Today, many continue to work with the medicine while honouring the Indigenous traditions from which it comes.

While every person's experience is unique, Kambo invites us to slow down and meet ourselves with presence, courage, and curiosity.

How the Ceremony Unfolds:

Every Kambo ceremony begins with a comprehensive health screening, preparation guidance, and an opportunity to discuss your intentions, answer any questions, and ensure the medicine is appropriate for you.

The medicine is applied through small superficial points on the skin, allowing the secretion to be absorbed through the lymphatic system. Every person's experience is unique, and there is no "right" way to respond to the medicine. Physical responses may include warmth, an increased heart rate, facial swelling, nausea, vomiting, or other forms of purging, although not everyone will experience all of these. The physical portion of the ceremony is often complete within 20 to 40 minutes, though every experience unfolds in its own way.

Following the ceremony, we take time to rest, rehydrate, and gently begin the process of integration. While the physical experience may be relatively brief, many people find the experience continues to unfold through reflection and integration in the days and weeks that follow.

As a trauma-informed plant medicine facilitator, I recognize that every person brings a unique body, nervous system, and life experience to the ceremony. Rather than assuming the same approach is right for everyone, each ceremony is approached with care, always prioritizing your safety and well-being. I believe that sometimes less is more, because the amount of medicine never defines the depth of the experience.

My relationship with Kambo has been deeply influenced by my training with the Matsés Tribe, where I had the privilege of learning not only the traditional application of the medicine, but also the deep respect, reciprocity, and responsibility with which it is approached. Those teachings continue to shape the way I prepare for, facilitate, and integrate every ceremony.

Although often spoken about alongside plant medicines, Kambo is not a psychedelic. It contains over 100 naturally occurring bioactive peptides and is applied to small points on the skin, where it is absorbed through the lymphatic system and initiates a powerful physical response unique to each individual.

These peptides have become the focus of growing scientific interest for their potential effects on the immune, cardiovascular, digestive, and nervous systems.

While research continues to evolve, my relationship with Kambo is rooted first and foremost in honouring the Indigenous wisdom and traditions that have cared for this medicine for generations.
